The region


Structure of economy:

The economical structure of the region of Gmünd is dominated by the industrial sector e.g. textile, glass. Besides the majority of small and medium sized companies, larger companies of the following sectors are located here: metal and electrical, food and amylum, prefabricated houses and software.
The structure of industries on the Czech site is dominated by: railway repairing, glass and ceramics, construction and building materials, metal and textile.

Workforce:

In the districts of Waldviertel and Southern Bohemia live about 400.000 inhabitants respectively 2000.000 workforce.

Level of education:

The region of Waldviertel dispose of a number of secondary schools, commercial colleges, vocational and higher technical schools. Besides approximately 600 skilled workers are trained there annually.
In the Southern Bohemian districts of České Budějovice and Jindrichuv Hradec a number of vocational and commercial as well as secondary schools and high schools specialized in skilled professions are located e.g. construction, machinery and trade. In the cities of České Budějovice and Jindrichuv Hradec there are also several faculties of the University of South Bohemia, Faculty of Management of the Economical University and different research institutes of the Academy of Sciences.

Quality of life:

The largely untouched landscape with its extensive forests and countless ponds has a high leisure value. Those seeking relaxation will find a wide range of hiking, horse riding and cross-country skiing possibilities as well as well marked cross-border hiking and cycling paths, approximately 2.000 mountain-bike kilometres, tennis courts and golf courses.

However, the region offers not only natural beauty, but also cultural and historical treasures. The town of Gmünd looks back on an 800 year history and has- as do many other towns in that area- a town centre which is worth seeing. A large number of castles, chateaus and admirable destinations bear witness to the regions history.
